Man arrested for allegedly stealing a cookie
Lagos police on Wednesday indicted a 31-year-old man, Sunday Hungbeji, before a Badagry Court of First Instance for allegedly stealing one butter cookie valued at N1,250.
Mr. Hungbeji, whose address is unknown, is being tried on a robbery charge.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Akpan Nko, told the court that the defendant committed the crime on March 16, 2022, around 6:00 pm at Beach Town Mall, No. 1, Joseph Dou Way, Badagry, Lagos.
Mr Nko said the defendant allegedly stole a shortbread cookie valued at N1,250, owned by Beach Town Mall.
“The defendant entered the mall and stole the cookie and hid it in his pocket, unaware that a CCTV camera had recorded it.
“On his way out, security approached him and arrested him with the cookie in his pocket.
“When he was unable to defend himself as to how the item got into his pocket, he was arrested and handed over to police for processing.
“The offense contravened Section 287 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015,” the prosecutor said.
Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaiya granted the accused bail of 50,000 naira with a surety, which must be posted.
The Chief Magistrate adjourned the case until April 26, by mention.
